Advancing Australia’s VET Sector – curated industry news #03 2022

Some progressive changes afoot at ASQA in the past month, which is great to see – with an objective to support the continued elevation of excellence in delivering quality VET in Australia and in ensuring the integrity of national qualifications, as well as a keen focus on the self-assurance of registered training organisations.

ASQA welcomed the appointment of members to the inaugural National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Advisory Council at the beginning of April.

“ASQA’s purpose is to ensure quality VET so that students, employers, governments, and the community have confidence in the integrity of national qualifications issued by training providers.” said ASQA CEO, Saxon Rice

“The appointment of the Advisory Council will facilitate continuous improvement of ASQA’s governance practices and improve ASQA’s access to high-level ongoing expert advice, including in relation to ASQA’s strategic objectives and approach to regulation. Our overarching goal is to move from input and compliance controls, to a focus on self-assurance and excellence in training outcomes.”

Additionally, ASQA has joined eight national regulators operating cost recovery models to review and develop best practice regulator performance.

ASQA is also participating in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet’s (PM&C) cost recovery review, which aims to improve regulator performance and accountability.

The PM&C’s Best Practice Cost Recovery Project brings 9 national regulators operating cost recovery models together to review best practice regulator performance. The project will review how regulators use cost recovery to inform their decisions around resource allocation, regulatory performance, and organisational design ahead of ASQA’s operation as a full cost recovery agency from 1 July 2022.

As part of this process, ASQA has developed a draft model for self-assurance, through a co-design process with the sector.

We will have lots more to say on self-assurance for RTOs in the coming months. In the meantime, you can read our blog post ‘RTO Self-Assurance – what it all means
